Hotel tourism

Santa Barbara continues to profit from its taxes on hotel beds.

May brought in $2.74 million in transitional occupancy taxes for the city, about $461,000 more than the same month the year before.

Compared to pre-pandemic levels in May 2019, revenue increased by 37%, but this was also due to the increase in average daily room rates, which were 46% higher than in May 2019.

The steady improvement in demand for rooms from the local travel industry continued into the spring and summer as more COVID-related restrictions were lifted, according to the city’s finance department.

Santa Barbara has raised $28.5 million through May, about $5 million more than the enacted budget for the current fiscal year.

The city’s Transient Occupancy Tax is 12% and is charged for hotel rooms, motel rooms, vacation rentals, and short-term rental stays.
